Inclusive Practice: Autism is a practical, face-to-face, CPD-certified course from Inclusion by Team Teach. It helps schools build consistent, evidence-informed practice that educators can apply immediately.

 

Overview

This CPD-certified course has been created to provide practical support to anyone working with autistic children and young people in schools and education settings.

Many of us are aware of autism and how it can impact an individual’s learning experience, but it can be difficult to know how we should adapt everyday practice to support our students more inclusively, how to remove any barriers to learning for them, and how we can respond more confidently and consistently to meet their individual needs.

Inclusive Practice: Autism helps staff understand how autistic students may experience communication, sensory environments, transitions, learning, and emotional regulation and how unmet needs can shape behaviour.

Course attendees will learn practical, inclusive strategies for real-life situations, to enable autistic students to participate effectively in learning, build self-esteem and independence, engage with staff, peers and their environment successfully, and develop a strong sense of belonging.

 

The 6-hour course covers:

  • Autism and neurodiversity, including a move away from deficit-based language.
  • How differences in communication, cognition, interests and learning may show up in the classroom.
  • The sensory and physical environment, including the eight sensory systems, environmental overload, visual supports and structured teaching.
  • Behaviour as communication, anxiety and emotional regulation.
  • Transitions, curriculum adaptations, social interaction and play.
  • Working with parents, carers and SEND professionals, alongside whole-school practice.

 

Who is this course for?

Anyone working with children or young people who would like to deepen their understanding of autism and possible barriers to learning, discover how unmet needs can shape behaviour, and develop practical strategies to support students for more inclusive and effective learning environments.

Headteachers, senior leaders, SENDCOs, inclusion leads, MAT leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, learning support staff, behaviour leads and pastoral teams.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain current evidence-informed perspectives on autism and how these influence behaviour, communication and learning.
  • Recognise the impact of sensory processing, executive functioning, communication differences and emotional regulation on participation in school.
  • Apply practical, strengths-based strategies that reduce barriers and promote inclusion within mainstream classrooms.
  • Use the Assess, Plan, Do, Review framework to identify needs, implement reasonable adjustments and evaluate their impact.
  • Work effectively with pupils, families and colleagues to develop consistent, person-centred approaches that improve outcomes for autistic learners.

 

This course is delivered in four parts:

Part 1: Assess — Seeing the Whole Picture

What autism is and isn’t, and the key thinking frameworks behind it: the double empathy problem, monotropism and predictive processing. Covers why identification isn’t culturally neutral, masking, autistic burnout, and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA). Reframes assessment as building a full picture of strengths alongside difficulties, not just a deficit checklist.

  • This covers:
    • Module 1: Foundations of autism & neurodiversity
    • Module 2: Understanding autism in the classroom

Part 2: Plan — Language, Experience & Partnership

Why language matters, sensory processing needs and interoception, and how to redesign transitions rather than expecting a child to cope with a difficult one. Covers the social experience of autistic pupils, families as experts and unequal family access to the system, children as their own advocates, and supporting neurodivergent colleagues.

  • This covers:
    • Module 3: The sensory & physical environment
    • Module 4: Behaviour as communication & emotional regulation

 

Part 3: Do — Communication, Executive Function & Strategies

Matching strategies to the need in front of you rather than the label, modelling and scaffolding executive function, and why forced eye contact can cost a child processing capacity. Covers visual support, now-and-next boards, and how to deploy TAs so they extend teaching rather than replace it.

    • Module 5: Inclusive pedagogy & transitions

Part 4: Review — Progress and Leading Change

How autism overlaps with other neurodivergence and with trauma, and how to build lasting change through a visible quick win and a standing review cycle. Covers inclusive design over individual fixes, whole-school consistency, the legal framework, and the disproportionate impact of exclusion on autistic pupils.

    • Module 6: Collaboration & professional practice

 

What makes this different from other autism training courses?

This course:

  • Explains the cause behind the behaviour: covers the thinking frameworks driving behaviour and experience, so the strategies make sense rather than feeling like a checklist.
  • Intersectionality runs through every section: race, gender, sex, class, language and other identities run through the whole day, covering who gets missed, misread or diagnosed late, rather than sitting in a single add on slide.
  • Strengths based throughout: strengths and difficulties are treated as coexisting, not autism framed purely as a deficit.
  • Focuses on the system: strategies focus on redesigning transitions, the sensory environment and how support is offered, rather than asking a child to mask or try harder.

  • For 2026, the annual fee will reflect the number of Team Teach-certified staff within your setting.
  • This per-setting fee ensures every certified individual in your setting can access Team Teach Connect’s award-winning Knowledge Hub Inclusion resources and the Support Service.
  • Your staff require an active per-setting subscription for their Team Teach certificates to remain valid.
  • A setting refers to a single place of business, e.g., a school, care home or residential home. An organisation can comprise of a number of settings e.g. a Multi Academy Trust of schools, a Care company, a fostering agency or a recruitment agency with multiple branches.

Here’s our banded pricing structure for 2026:

  • 1–24 certified staff: £170 (+ VAT)
  • 25+ certified staff: £220 (+ VAT)
  • Pricing to be supplied

 

How it works:

  • For existing customers, the fee will be calculated at your renewal date.
  • For new customers, it will be based on your first training event in 2026.
  • This is a per-setting charge.
  • Team Teach Connect is a mandatory part of Team Teach training.
